Life Is Amusing

A friend reminded me of this small fact, over lunch at NUH's food court on Thursday. Ironic, but it is perhaps in the starkest circumstances that the simplest truths show up most clearly. It really helped to have had this reminder - today would have been a most unfunny day if not for it.

Carpentry invasion. Amusing aspect: You need to fit the pieces together for it to make any sense. Else, you're just wooden-headed.

Problem with the air con - compressor could not fit through the window out to the ledge. Miscomms somewhere along the value chain. Loud debates from one end of the house to the other. Amusing aspect 1:  could actually hear all the argument above the din of the carpentry works. Guess everyone's vocal cords are working well. Either that, or the house has good acoustics. Amusing aspect 2: Had a mental image of us using a sophisticated pulley system to hoist the compressor up from the outside - up 25 storeys. Amusing aspect 3: the solution? Remove the window frame in order to put the compressor through, then fix it back.

First post-lunch appointment: with the curtains/blinds man - Advisor. Problem with the pelmets. Too narrow to fit the blinds comfortably for cleaning. Amusing aspect: we realised flipping the blinds around looks nicer than the usual way of fixing them up anyway. Advisor thought so too.

Second post-lunch appointment: with the bomb shelter rack man - Little Twinkle.

Amusing aspect 1: Finance Minister received a call in the morning, thinking it was him. ... ... FM: Hello? Ah yes... Ah, now? We said 3pm what. You want to come down now? (looks to LB for help. LB shakes head furiously - meeting Advisor in 1 hour's time. cannot make it)... Oh, cannot lah. We got another appointment first. I thought I told you 3pm?! ... Wait wait wait, are you ___ ? You are not? Then are you ____ ? huh, you also not? Then who are you?????

Who it was, I'll never know. Didn't matter - Little Twinkle came down anyway at 3pm. He got to the house earlier than us actually - we were still at the void deck with Advisor, looking at the blinds materials under daylight. Little Twinkle did some quick measurements, then went off. He'd received a phone call rushing him to the next block for another job. We told him we'd think about it then give him a call.

Amusing aspect 2: in the meantime, Uncle Teo came up to our new place. He'd moved in around Christmas, and is nicely settled on the 20th floor. Finance Minister was quite eager to see how he did up his bomb shelter, so we paid him and Auntie Teo a visit. We liked what we saw - very sturdy shelves. He was very sweet - took out the invoice for us to see. Realised it was the same company as Little Twinkle's! Uncle Teo said, "Actually, if you want, I call him now to ask him to come and meet you lah. He's in the area, a few minutes ago my friend from the next block just called him to rush him down from dunno where..." Huh?! Could it be Little Twinkle who did Uncle Teo's shelves then? :-)

Was very pleased to have ET down at our new place too - so sweet of her to come by despite the mess! You're an angel, ET! Finance Minister says you're simply so likeable :-)
