Holistic health

I think moving house is a good way to achieve holistic health and wellbeing. It is

1. Physically strengthening

I just realised today that any part of the body can be used to hold things up, down or together. Do not underestimate the power of your small toe or elbow.

2. Intellectually stimulating

How many ways are there to put things into boxes? Infinite. It's a mental stretch to figure out how to best pack in order to get your money's worth for the boxes you've paid for from the movers. It's also challenging to recall where things are placed after they are packed in. And to devise a system for zero-error shifting and zero casualties.

If like us, you take a proactive role in determining the design of your new place, then the creative design process is extremely stimulating too :-)

3. Emotionally rewarding

Don't think there's much value in dregging up relics from the past and going through them? Think again. There's plenty to laugh about - especially when it comes to photos, old clothes, writings and trinkets. What were we thinking then? Truly, we walk (like fashion disasters) by grace...

4. Spiritually refreshing

Understatement to say moving house is a character-building ( or -testing) experience. Ok, at least, ours is. All the activity around unearthing stuff and seeing where I've come from, where I've been and seem to be headed... makes for a special time of renewal. Makes me slow down and think deeply about next steps.

Remembering that all things eventually die and fade away, leaving only relationships and memories is a good base from which to ponder on the truly meaningful and significant. After all, the unexamined life is a life lived in vain.
