Laundry

The nice thing about our new place (which is the case for all the other units) is that the tekkor for hanging out laundry is parallel and close to the parapet wall at the service yard, rather than perpendicular. (actually, the latter makes a better spectacle, especially for overseas visitors...) This way of drying the clothes is much safer, since it means we don't have to stretch out too far with long poles of wet laundry and risk falling over the parapet! Better yet, every unit has a small 'roof' where the tekkor are, so that the clothes are protected from drips, and likewise for neighbours below.

So I was quite stunned early this morning to hear a piercing scream coming from one of the higher units: "Hey, the people upstairs! Can you stop dripping your laundry?! #@?!*&..." (This was delivered in colourful Mandarin, which I can't do a justifiable translation of) Eh, correct place or not? How to 'drip' laundry in this place? :-p This went on for 15min, during which many of us from the other units started staring curiously out from our kitchen/service yard windows (the scolding filled the common airwell that we share). Well, I went to check out the commotion because I just wanted to be sure it wasn't us getting scolded :-(

Strange. I don't know how the families in question resolved it, but they stopped after a heated exchange. Perhaps they took it to the corridor on the other side :-p Reminded me that somehow, conversations can be heard very clearly. It might have to do with the structure of the building and how we literally look into each other's homes. I can hear details of some neighbours' conversations even while standing in the bathroom with the water running!
