A Lasting Tradition

Can't remember when we started having family Christmas dinners, but I know we didn't always have them. Perhaps it was sometime after I began working, and could afford buying an overpriced, oversized bird for a meal that everyone would have to continue eating for 5 days in 378 forms.

Anyways. It was Christmas dinner again today. Fast, how a year has passed. Still remember trying to make a 2-tier chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting last year. Well, this year we went healthy. Did a pumpkin & apple soup. Tossed a spinach, rocket, argula, baked feta & walnut salad. Rough-roasted some potatoes, and toasted some fluffy garlic bread. Oh, and the turkey of course. Rounded everything up with fruit parfaits. If you like yogurt, you might like this: mix Greek yogurt with maple syrup, and layer with fruits like bananas, plums, peaches, grapes, kiwi, blueberries & strawberries. Sweet and tart all at once. Quite a refreshing way to end off a meal.

But the best part of what has become a family tradition is the painstaking task of shredding and keeping all the leftover turkey meat and bones. We worked quite fast this year - were done in 1 hour. Demolished the formidable bird into a lil hill of moist meat, which later went neatly into 9 containers. Plans for turkey macaroni soup on Sunday. Am thinking of a turkey quiche as well...

Guess this is one tradition that won't change, 730m down the road :-)

  1. Ooh, love that tradition :) Did you roast your own turkey? We had friends come over to roast a turkey in our oven. Was tummy. I love turkey congee too!
