Reunion, Homestyle

One year ago, we did lots of cooking for Reunion dinner - celebrating our 1st anniversary in our new home. This year, we were a lot more Zen about it - went the hotpot route. To make it more interesting, Finance Minister decided we would do a blind vote for hotpot ingredients i.e. everyone had to write down 5 things to eat, without knowledge of what the others were choosing.

We ended up with a rather nice selection, including a few firsts. It's a real blessing to be able to afford some of the items we had on the table :)

Soy milk-chicken nabe stock

Finance Minister's out-of-this-world braised mushrooms & sea cucumber: melt-in-your-mouth texture *yums*

Abalone & sea scallops

Cuttlefish & Foochow fishballs

Mixed mushrooms & Vietnamese rice noodles

Kurobuta pork

Beef shabu-shabu

Chinese lettuce & Tang Or (chrysanthemum leaves)

Menu with the food :)

And saving the best for last... mee sua (salted Chinese wheat flour noodles) dunked in the soy milk chicken broth, topped with a just-cooked slice of beef and some chewy abalone ;)
